It's official! 2016 is our 25th anniversary year of providing expert hospice care in the heart of our community!
Over the past quarter of a century, and with the support of our local community, we have been able to provide care to many thousands of patients and their loved ones facing a life limiting illness.
The South West Herts Charitable Trust (as it was initially known) was set up in June 1991 and immediately began to raise funds that would allow the former Memorial Hospital to re-open as a dedicated hospice. This initial funding allowed us to run a day service from a portacabin outside of the Peace Hospice building and shaped the service we have become today.
Since these humble beginnings, the Hospice now offers a hospice at home service, inpatient care, a day service run through our Starlight Centre and bereavement support.
Former trustee, Gill Hollander who was behind the initial fundraising appeal 25 years ago recalls, 'the beginning was just a non stop fight to get things underway. In the early days people were worried we would not be able to continue and we would go bust and the Health Authority thought they would have to take it over. Nobody knew how generous the people of South West Hertfordshire were. It was amazing. We originally had a target of £2 million to raise. We didn't know it was going to cost £4 million.'
Hospice Chairman of Trustees, David Ellis OBE said 'It's only because of the fantastic support of our local community that we are celebrating 25 years. The vision of those involved at the outset in setting up the charity was inspiring and crucially laid the vital foundations for what we have become today.
'Many people have been touched by the work of Peace Hospice Care over the years and I want to thank everyone who has continued to support us, whether that's through donating their money or in giving us their time. Each and every contribution has enabled us to continue providing care to those people in our community facing a life limiting illness.
'We rely on our community's continued to do everything that they can to continue supporting as we look to raise the £5 million we need to run our services each and every year'.
