Bushey Symphony Orchestra's New Year Classics in support of Peace Hospice Care
Bushey Symphony Orchestra (BSO) – 20 January 2019 concert
BSO's New Year Concert on Sunday 20th January 2019 at 3pm in the Grand Hall at Bushey Academy is being held in support of Peace Hospice Care. It features the music of three popular composers born in the 19th century:
The BSO is conducted by music director, George Vass, and joined by BBC Music Magazine award-winner Fenella Humphreys as violin soloist.
The concert opens with Elgar's early Froissart overture, inspired by the 14th-century 'Chronicles of Jean Froissart'. Composed in 1890, to a commission from the Worcester Three Choirs Festival, it was first performed there in September that year conducted by the composer.
Finnish composer Jean Sibelius' wonderfully romantic Violin Concerto in D minor follows. Written in 1904, it has become the most frequently performed and recorded 20th-century violin concerto. Cast in three movements, with a huge violin cadenza at the end of the first, it is truly symphonic in scope, with both solo violin and orchestra taking equal musical responsibility.
The programme ends with Dvorak's popular Eighth Symphony. Before departing for America, Dvorak composed this life-affirming work, filled with joy and effervescent energy. The countryside was an ever-present source of inspiration for Dvorak, particularly evident in this symphony, which emerged during long forest walks.
Described as 'alluring', 'unforgettable' and 'a wonder', Fenella Humphreys is one of the UK's most established and versatile violinists. Winner of BBC Music Magazine's Instrumental Award 2018, she enjoys a busy career combining chamber music and solo work, performing in prestigious venues around the world. She is frequently broadcast on the BBC and Classic FM.
