Between the 1st and 9th of March 2016, 13 intrepid explores conquered the highest peak and the largest desert in North Africa and raised more than £24,000 between them for Peace Hospice Care.

It took the group two days to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal. Amie Lacey from Hunton Bridge, who is a Sister at the Hospice's In Patient Unit, said: "The toughest part was climbing Mount Toubkal, trying to reach the summit whilst fighting against altitude sickness: including dizziness, nausea and quite a headache."

However, Ms Lacey also describe this part of the trip as the most rewarding: "Standing at the top of Mount Toubkal looking over the Atlas Mountains and Morocco with my fellow Trekkers; and standing in silence for one minute in memory of those we've loved and lost and those who had given us inspiration, was the best part for me. It was a team effort to get up and it remained on the way down and throughout the Sahara. I felt truly blessed to be part of such a team."

Walking across the Sahara also presented some challenges. Ms Lacy added: "On the second night the team faced a sand storm, which was daunting and frightening for us; but the guides were brilliant and made us feel safe and secured our tents. The biggest challenge was walking through soft sand dunes without any shade or shelter. It was definitely a work out!"

Claire Lyden, Fundraising Events Co-ordinator at Peace Hospice Care, said: "The group were brilliant! Not only did they cope with the high altitude and cold conditions of Mount Toubkal, they also braved the desert heat and sand storms. Completing the trek in a short space of time with two very different terrains was extremely challenging but also incredibly rewarding. We're very grateful to the trekkers for undertaking this challenge to support Peace Hospice Care."

The trekkers raised over £24,000 for Peace Hospice Care. The Hospice needs to raise over £5 million every year in order to run and develop its specialist services. All the care that the Hospice provides to its patients and their families is given free.
